Frequently Asked Questions
Brass Community School FAQ’s
For your convenience, we have listed the top commonly asked questions and their answers. If you do not find an answer to the question you have, please contact your child’s teacher or the main office. All contact information is listed on our contact page. Thank you!
1. What time does school start in the morning and when does school dismiss?
Doors to the school open at 8:35 a.m. Prior to 8:35 a.m., there is NO supervision so students are not permitted in the building. Parents are asked to NOT send their children any earlier than necessary to arrive between 8:35 and 8:45 a.m.
Parents may wait with their children in the gym until the teachers arrive to pick them up at 8:45 a.m.
Students arriving after 8:45 a.m. run the risk of being marked tardy. Students who are not inside of their classroom when the tardy bell chimes at 8:50 a.m. will need to report to the office and will be marked as being tardy. Tardiness is treated as unexcused unless a student receives an excuse from the principal.
Being on time is considered by our school and community as a VERY important life skill, so it is treated as such. Students are allowed three “free” tardy events per quarter. The fourth tardy results in a lunch detention. We do realize the challenges that come with such a system, but we do feel that this is an important life skill to teach our children.
Students arriving AFTER 9:10 a.m., will not be included in the lunch count. PARENTS MUST bring a lunch for their child!
Saftey patrol members will always be released 5 minutes early. This allows them to get to their post before the rest of our students are dismissed.
DAY CARE/BUS RIDER: While the majority of our students walk home or are picked up by parents, there are some day care providers that pick students up after school. Students taking day care will be dismissed to a specific location in the school and exit the south side of the school where approved day care transport vehicles may park on school property. Students are expected to wait until staff releases them to the designated provider. It is the responsibility of the parents to make sure that dismissal procedures are communicated to the school and day care.
WALKERS/PARENT PICK UP: All students who are not day care or bus riders will be released by their teacher directly onto the playground behind the school (no exceptions). Students are permitted to walk back to the front of the school using sidewalks on either side of the school to meet their parents. Students are NOT permitted to exit any door other than those in the back of the school. (In the event of inclimate weather, parents should pick up their children as close to the playground as possible). PICKING UP YOUR CHILD EARLY FROM SCHOOL COUNTS AS ONE OF YOUR EXCUSED ABSENCES AND MAY RESULT IN TRUANCY VIOLATIONS.
Dismissal is at 3:50 p.m. Monday thru Thursday and at 12:46 p.m. EVERY Friday! Parents are expected to be on time.
Late pick up is NOT permitted! All students MUST be picked up within 10 minutes of dismissal. Failure to do so may result in a referral to the Kenosha Police Department or Juvenile Crisis.
2. Is lunch served to students on Fridays?
A universal, cold lunch will be served to all students who request lunch on that day. All students will eat lunch in their classrooms prior to dismissal assuring all children the opportunity to eat an afternoon meal. School will dismiss at 12:46 p.m. following lunch.
3. What are the teachers doing on Fridays since school ends at 12:46 p.m. every Friday?
(Information regarding this can be found under the “ABOUT” section of our home page.)
4. My child is sick and won’t be in school today. What notifications should I make?
The child’s parents or guardians should call the school office as early in the morning as possible so that the absence is excused. Feel free to leave a message on the school’s answering machine. If it’s not possible to contact the school office the day of absence please send a note to school the following day.
5. My child will be late to school, what should I do?
Parents/guardians of children who will be arriving to school late MUST call the office before 9 a.m. and let us know so we can order them a lunch if it is desired. Every morning we must call in a lunch order to the district office by 9:10 a.m. (at the latest) so they can prepare the lunches. Lunches are only ordered once a day and over 20 elementary schools are ordering at the same time.
IMPORTANT: If you do not call us by 9 a.m. to let us know your child will need a lunch, you MUST provide a lunch for your child as they will not have a lunch waiting for them at their lunch time.
6. Where is the lost and found?
The lost and found is located in our cafeteria. All items are set out during conference times, so be sure to check the table. Items are left out for parents at parent-teacher conferences. Anything not claimed after conferences is donated to the public.
7. How will I know if the school is closed for a weather emergency?
Rather than calling the office please listen to: WLIP (1050 AM), WRKZ, WKZN-FM, WGTD (91.1 FM), WTMJ or cable channel 20. You may also find school closing information on the Kenosha Unified School District’s home page. In the event that school is closed, the radio stations will be notified prior to 5:45 A.M. and appropriate announcements will be made.
8. What is the phone number to call for school closings?
You may call 359-SNOW (7669) to see if schools are closed.
9. Will my child have a locker at school?
So far, we have had enough space for all students in grades 1-5 to have a locker and students in pre-K and K have their cubbies in their room. Lockers are the property of the school, not of the child. Therefore, they can be searched at any time. They do not have locks on them, so NO valuables should every be kept in them. They are specifically provided for storing a jacket, hats, and gloves.
10. Can my child have a cell phone in school?
Cell phones are not permitted at Brass Community School as we have a beautiful, new building with phones in every room. If a child needs to contact home, or if home needs to get a message to a child, it is possible at any minute of the day by calling the main office at 262-359-8000. We, as a school, do not accept responsibility for lost or stolen items that are not permitted in school.
11. How can I keep up to date with school information?
The easiest way to do this is by going to our home page at this website. Teachers will send home newsletters as well. The other best way to receive up to date information is by “liking us” on Facebook. We update our Facebook site every day.
If there is a question that you still have that hasn’t been answered here, please feel free to call the main office at 262-359-8000. We will help in any way that we can!
